Mike Carter has 23 years of legal experience as general counselor, corporate claim counsel and a private practice attorney. He concentrates his practice primarily on insurance coverage and disputes, as well as general civil litigation. A seasoned, well-rounded lawyer, he is skilled at managing and handling complex litigation, analyzing case law, interpreting contracts and insurance policies, writing opinions, resolving conflicts, interacting with regulators, and providing general counsel to claim professionals and business clients.
Mike is a strong advocate and approaches client issues with the goal of actively reducing risk exposure while ensuring high quality client service. He has significant experience in insurance law, litigation and dispute resolution, most recently as former in-house counsel for a leading insurer where he shared management responsibility for a regional claim center. In this capacity, he provided general legal counsel and strategic advice to executive management, leaders of major business lines, managers, business partners and claim professionals, and managed litigation brought against the insurer. Prior to assuming the Twin Cities general counselor role, he served as senior counsel of national coverage for the same insurer, providing coverage analysis and litigation management across multiple jurisdictions and business lines.
For nine years prior to going in house, Mike developed substantial litigation experience in both the public and private sector. Early in his career, Mike was an assistant county attorney for Pine County, Minnesota. Thereafter, he transitioned into private practice focusing on insurance defense litigation involving coverage issues, arson, insurance fraud, subrogation and other related matters.
Mike received his J.D., cum laude, from Hamline University School of Law, where he was a senior associate for the law review and a member of the civil rights moot court team. He received his B.A. in political science from the University of Minnesota.
Mike is actively involved in youth sports programs as a coach and administrator. He enjoys a variety of diverse activities from hiking and fishing to riding his motorcycle and playing team and individual sports.
