Michael Ryan’s practice is focused on civil litigation, including product liability, environmental law, employment law, patent and trademark infringement, commercial/business disputes and negligence law. He has tried over 30 cases since admission to practice and has represented clients in a wide variety of environmental matters, including Superfund litigation, underground storage tank and products pipeline cases, and mold/indoor air quality cases.

Mike is approved environmental counsel for a number of insurance companies. He has also served as regional coordinating counsel in product liability litigation involving the direct handling and supervision of cases in state and federal courts in a ten state area.

Mike has represented business clients in contract litigation, shareholder disputes and other types of commercial litigation. As part of his employment law practice, Mike serves as local counsel in Minnesota for a number of national accounts handling discrimination, wrongful discharge, and related employment litigation in state and federal courts. His patent and intellectual property infringement practice experience includes an appearance in the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington D.C. on an appeal from a summary judgment granted in favor of Mike’s client.

He is admitted to practice in the state courts of Minnesota and Wisconsin. He is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts, District of Minnesota and Wisconsin, and the Seventh and Eighth Circuit Courts of Appeals. Mike served as president of the firm and chair of the management committee from 1996-2000.

Mike served as president of the Minnesota Defense Lawyers Association (MDLA) in 2000-01 and was a member of the MDLA Board of Directors from 1995-02. In 2002, he was appointed Minnesota’s State Representative to DRI – The Voice of the Defense Bar, the national organization for trial lawyers practicing primarily on the defense side of civil litigation.

As a regular lecturer and author for CLE seminars, Mike presents on substantive law and topics related to trials and the civil litigation process and is a member of the local, state and national bar associations. He has repeatedly been recognized by his peers as a Minnesota Super Lawyer in Minnesota Law & Politics.

Mike received his J.D. in 1981 from Hamline University School of Law and his B.A. from the College of St. Thomas in 1978. While in law school he was recipient of the Outstanding First Year Advocate Award and a member of Sigma Nu Phi law fraternity.
